A new study finds that the popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra may cause dangerous side effects when combined with other treatments for high blood pressure.
Dr. John Hargreaves, a consultant urology clinic in San Diego who specializes in men’s health and reproductive health, at a San Diego hospital said the combination of Viagra and other drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction can cause dangerous side effects.
“I’m not sure if it’s related to the way Viagra is prescribed or the way it interacts with other drugs,” he told CBSNews.com. “I think the side effects are more likely when it’s mixed with Viagra, and that’s why it’s so important to have a look at what’s going on with the combination.”
Hargreaves said that taking a daily pill of sildenafil or tadalafil is safe, as is mixing it with nitrates. He also said the combination of Viagra and nitrates can cause dangerous heart problems.
“If you’re taking a nitrate medication like nitroglycerin, that may have something to do with the nitrates,” he said. “If you’re taking an erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra, that can cause dangerous side effects.”
Hargreaves said that people who use nitrates should not take Viagra or any other nitrate drug because it can increase the blood pressure, which can lead to heart problems.
